Jiu Jitsu Kimonos Of Various Types

By Shelly Murdock

Jiu Jitsu Kimonos are martial arts training uniforms. They include three pieces: pants, jacket and a belt. There are approximately 100 different brands available.

Also referred to as a gi, a kimono is classified by the kind of material they are made of. This is called the type of weave. Although there may be some additional variations depending on the brand, there are 5 basic weave types to choose from.

The single weave is most popular. The less expensive, lighter fabric is also easy to grasp. Yet, this kind is often chosen for hot weather.

The gold weave is a mixture of the single and double weave, yet more durable than a single weave. Many fighters prefer this hybrid fabric because it complicates the possibility of being gripped while not being heavy.

The double weave is more expensive and heavier than the other two kinds. It may not be popular. The stiffness it has makes it uncomfortable, however, hard to grip. This sometimes makes double weave the preference in competitions. Fighters must be warned that this heavy fabric adds pounds for the weigh in.

Honey Comb, Pearl, Platinum and Diamond are middle weight weaves that do not fall into the standard categories previously described. These materials are not very different from each other. Manufacturers vary in the way they are marketed more than in the way they are made.

The ultra light weave is the newest kind known of today. This fabric is lighter that the single weave, making hot weather and weigh ins simple and stress free.

As is the case with all clothing, kimonos usually have various sizes for men, women and children. Traditionally, gi colors are white, black or blue. Many producers today make them in red, yellow, pink or even camouflage.

The gi belt tells the skill level the fighter is in. It is worn around the waist and has a specific color. A white one indicates the beginning rank. Next is yellow. Orange and blue come after yellow. Purple and brown are next. Black is the most advanced rank.

Jiu Jitsu Kimonos are a type of martial arts uniform that many companies produce. They vary in color, size and weight. Though lighter gis are more comfortable and allow easier movement, heavier ones are more durable and make it more difficult for the opponent to grab the fighter. Every gi has a belt. The belt color tells the fighter's skill level and is actually the most noticed piece of a kimono.
