Leonardo DiCaprio: Actor and Environmentalist

By Sredna Nesegleh

Leonardo DiCaprio started his career in commercials, but has went on to create a career that most other actors are jealous of. While some of his more classic movies are not those that he is most proud of, it is the ones that have helped him to get where he is today and something can be said for that. From being booted off of Romper Room for being too disruptive to his status as "king of the world" in Titanic to his latest offerings, Leonard DiCaprio has crafted a career for himself that is sure to keep him in the forefront of movie history for many years to come.

Starting Off
Iremelin and George DiCaprio brought Leonardo into the world on November 11, 1974. Although they divorced when Leo was just a year old, he was encouraged in his acting pursuits from a very young age. He and his dad lived in Los Angeles for most of his formative years and before he was in elementary school, he made his first foray into film and television's world.

From Commercials to Television
Commercials and educational programs were the first roles that DiCaprio had. He was included in the children's television series, Romper Room, until he was booted off of the show due to being disruptive. His next role was in the short lived television version of Parenthood in 1990 and he was featured in smaller roles on both Lassie and Roseanne. His career was most boosted by his role as Luke Brower on the ABC sitcom, Growing Pains.

Movies and Leonardo
In 1992, DiCaprio was cast in What's Eating Gilbert Grape? with Johnny Depp. He earned award nominations for this role, but it was just the beginning of the success that he was going to enjoy. Other movies that he was in during the 1990's include The Quick and the Dead, Total Eclipse, and Romeo + Juliet. His roles were very diverse, from being a homosexual to a love interest to a brother, DiCaprio has shown a very big range of ability that has kept him in great demand for years. In 1997, he received the role that boosted his career the most-that of Jack in the movie, Titanic 1997.

From Titanic On
Although Titanic was a huge theater and DVD success, the roles since then are the ones that Leonardo DiCaprio is most proud of. From The Man in the Iron Mask to Catch Me If You Can to Gangs of New York and The Aviator, DiCaprio has received dozens of nominations and for The Aviator he received a Golden Globe for Best Actor, which was the first of many awards that he received. His newest offerings are just as looked forward to and enjoyed. These include Inception, J.Edgar, and his upcoming The Great Gatsby.

Personal and Environmental Side
Gisele Bundchen and Bar Repaeli are two women that Leonardo has been linked to over the years, but his relationships tend to fizzle after a while. He is committed to many different environmental causes however. From being more environmentally friendly to animal rescue, DiCaprio has been praised by several environmental groups and continues to work to bring attention to the environmental issues that are part of the world.

Acting, producing, and the environment are the main ways that Leonardo DiCaprio spends his time. His career is one that may have started small, but has exploded into a huge success that can make him very proud. The delight of his fans all over the world is continuing to be fed with his offerings to the world. Watch for Leonardo DiCaprio and see how far he is able to go.
